J&L SPECIALTY LOUISVILLE EMPLOYEES CAPTURE SECOND PRIZE IN FRANCE
LOUISVILLE, Ohio, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Nine employees of J&L Specialty Products Corporation's Louisville Plant, competing as members of an employee participation team, won the second place prize in an international competition held recently near Paris, it was announced today.
The annual "Grand Prix Usinor Sacilor de la Qualite" is sponsored by Usinor Sacilor, the world's second-largest steel producer. Fourteen teams from Usinor and its subsidiaries' plants in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United States were selected to attend the competition, based on their record in suggesting and implementing new problem-solving ideas at their plants.
The "Louisville Sluggers" team, which captured the prize is one of 11 labor/management participation teams now active at J&L's Louisville Plant. Employees volunteer to serve on the teams and, after receiving training in problem-solving techniques, select their own projects to work on within the plant.
At the "Grand Prix" in France, the "Sluggers" described their solution to brass contamination in one of the plant's rolling mills which created quality, maintenance and productivity problems. The team's solution involved the design and installation of roller side guides that replaced the mill's existing brass side guides. The new system eliminated the contamination problem and resulted in improvements that yielded annual savings of $208,720.
Members of the "Louisville Sluggers" making the trip to France included Jackie Lorentz, Robert Bailey, Robert Haley Sr., Kurt Reynolds, Tom Bell, Gus Misorski, all of Louisville; James Petrack and Mark Mroczynski of North Canton, Ohio; and James Rose of Massillon, Ohio. Team members Billy Carter of Navarre, Ohio, William Wilder of Louisville, and Don Monroe of Hartville, Ohio, were unable to attend the competition. Dave Lorentz, LMPT coordinator, and Dave Jackson, LMPT facilitator, both of Louisville, accompanied the team members to France.
With 440 employees at its Louisville Plant, J&L Specialty Products Corporation is one of the nation's leading producers of stainless steel. J&L is a subsidiary of Ugine S.A. of Paris, the world's largest stainless steel producer. Ugine is a subsidiary of Usinor Sacilor.
