It's time to spa-rkle.

Sometimes it's just too gruelling to think about working out when it's cold and rainy outside. Make this season a time to pamper yourself instead with our guide to the city centre's top spas.

'At One' Day Spa, Great Western Arcade, Birmingham (www.atonedayspa.co.uk) This family-run spa, set in the mezzanine rooms above the Great Western Arcade, specialises in therapeutic and holistic treatments and has a relaxation lounge with soothing music, natural scents and easy sofas. Massages start at around PS30 for 30 minutes. Unusual treatments include colour and crystal therapy and the At One Signature Healing Therapy, which costs PS50 and incorporates reiki, aromatherapy, crystal healing, colour therapy and other holistic approaches to give you a tailored healing therapy.

Spa du Vin, Hotel du Vin, Church Street, Birmingham (www.hotelduvin.com/locations/birmingham) A pampering retreat that feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. There is a gym, steam room, a relaxation lounge and luxurious treatments from their 'little book of big oooo's!' Spa packages start at PS80 for an hour treatment with lunch, rising to PS245 for a 'top to toe experience' including lunch.

Individual treatments include salt scrubs, holistic face and back treatments and pre and post natal treatments, starting at around PS35.

Malmaison, The Mailbox, Wharfside Street, Birmingham (www.malmaison.com/locations/birmingham) Great place for a spot of pampering with the girls with its gymtonic gym and jacuzzi. Girlie Spa Nights In are available from PS99 per person and include a treatment, accommodation, breakfast and a bottle of wine. Unusual treatments include Chakra Balancing (PS85) which begins with body brushing and exfoliation to smooth and soften the skin followed by an indulgent massage, using nourishing essential oils and warmed volcanic stones to penetrate tired, aching muscles. There are also plenty of male grooming treatments on offer too, starting at around PS20.

Club and Spa, The Cube, Wharfside Street, Birmingham (www.hotelindigobirmingham.co.uk/club-and-spa) This spa promises a sensory journey with thermal rooms, sauna, steam room, relaxation area, mud and salt rooms. The unusual Couples Collection has been designed to make the most of precious time with a loved one. Couples can try the rasul experience - an ancient Egyptian bathing ritual which involves covering the body with clay before entering a decorated rasul chamber. The heat of the sauna hardens the clay and helps to detoxify your skin and then an infusion of steam fills the room to soften the clay before a gentle rain-like shower washes all the mud away leaving skin smooth. This starts at PS89. For less adventurous couples, there's also aromatic massages and facials. Individual treatments include the usual manicure and pedicures plus dry floatation experiences and reflexology.

The Spa, University College Birmingham, Newhall Street, Birmingham (www.ucb.ac.uk/facilities/the-spa).
