It's time to clear Michael's name.

I PRESUME the post office was the prototype for the maze system we have to endure when we want to buy stamps. Always allow for at least 15 minutes of your day to be wasted.

Airports have now adopted the system and got it off to a fine art. And you now have to put another hour on that tedious journey.

The first maze is to check in and then have every bottle of perfume confiscated and by the way, I would love to know where they go. The second one is the customs and search. The only thing missing from both bottlenecks is a sheep dip and a cattle prod. Make no mistake, it is going to get worse.

I have just been on a couple of trips abroad. September is always a good time to go away as the kids are back in school. And there are child free hotels.

I, like many people refuse to pay fast-tracking as I think it is a total rip-off.

Last week I was in Cyprus working and I was driving across the island where I was topping the bill at a five-star hotel.

Fiddling with my radio I found an English speaking station and to my joy and delight heard the news Michael Shields had been freed. I nearly crashed my car. I was straight on the phone to Cllr Joe Anderson to share my excitement. An innocent man had at last been freed. I was overwhelmed to find out that they wanted me to do the first radio interview but of course I couldn't as I wasn't there.

That night on stage I mentioned Michael, sang You'll Never Walk Alone and got him a standing ovation. The next day I had a silly, stupid grin on my face still. There's a trip I will never forget. As soon as I got back I went straight to the Shields household and got a great big hug from Michael. Now we have got to fully clear his name.
