It's the best of the West.

Walsall 3 Tranmere 1 STRIKER Craig Westcarr scored two and had a hand in the third as Dean Smith unveiled his new-look Walsall side.

The Saddlers made a flying start, taking the lead after four minutes when, following a short corner, Adam Chambers whipped a low cross into the box for Westcarr to hammer home.

Visiting keeper Owain Fon Williams made a string of fine saves before the hosts edged further ahead when Westcarr picked out debutant Milan Lalkovic, who marked the occasion with a low drive inside the far post.

Rovers cut the lead five minutes from half-time when skipper Andy Robinson bent a great free-kick from the left of the penalty box beyond the reach of Richard O'Donnell.

Flying And despite their continued improvement after the break, Chelsea loanee Lalkovic opened up their defence for the impressive Westcarr to add the third for Walsall in the 70th minute.

Saddlers manager Smith praised his team's flying start, but insisted they can still improve.

He said: "It's a really good start, but we lost our way a bit in the second half, though you have to give credit to Tranmere for the way they changed their system to cope with us.

"We have players with pace who can score goals, and I thought Westcarr and Ashley Hemmings were outstanding. There were a lot of really good performances out there today, but we can get better."
