It's one do-everything room.

Choice and arrangement of furniture are keys to why this room works. The owners felt they needed to add on to the 18- by 31-foot space to get a family room, dining room, library, and home office.

Los Angeles designer Van-Martin Rowe had a better idea. He designed three pivotal pieces of furniture in quarter-sawn white oak: an entertainment-display unit, secretary-style desk, and 6-foot-diameter table. Eschewing standard placement of table-nearest-kitchen and seating-by-fireplace, he arranged the pieces as shown in the plan.

Next Rowe chose seating for mobility: oversize (chair-and-a-half) armchairs on casters; eight cushioned wicker armchairs to be dining, desk, and occasional chairs. Adding flexibility are movable hassocks and artist Chris Jonic's painted side tables, which double as stools.

With so little wall space, rugs and fabric supply pattern, color, art. The owners requested fabrics "with the feel Of human hands," and Rowe incorporated textiles they had collected on their travels.
