AFTER yet another week of Union flag navel-gazing, we have a further sharp reminder that the UK is just part of a very troubled world.
Any one of us could have been caught up in the horrific events on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice on Thursday night.
It's at times like this we realise that France is not some foreign place and that Europe is not just a collection of official buildings. These are our friends and neighbours and allies.
Their problems are our problems and their challenges are our challenges.
Let's hope that penny will also drop in the mind of our new Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson.
These are serious times which call for serious people.
Lame jokes and buffoonery will sell us all short.
