It's BUFF at the top.

Byline: Darren Liggett

IT HAS been a busy few weeks for local drift sensation Mark 'Sidewaysbuff' Luney, taking on two championships in two weeks - in two very different cars.

Three weeks ago, Luney piloted the SVA Imports/ of Log Cosworth Nissan 350z at Knockhill Racing Circuit, as part of the European Drift Championship. Then, a fornight ago, it was off to the world famous Silverstone Circuit for the British Drift Championship, this time behind the wheel of the SATS Toyota Supra.

Knockhill was host to the second round of the European Drift Championship, which Mark was leading thanks to the first win of the year at Oulton Park.

In the top 8, competing against Pete Barber in a borrowed Toyota Soarer, Luney put in a perfect performance in the first run, with his opponent equally good. However, Mark was handed the second run when Barber lost his cool, and went off the track.

In the semi-final, Mark was up against Kieran Cameron in his Apex V8 Nissan Silvia S13. Again an opponent's mistake paved the way through to the final for Buff.

The final was a re-run of last years decisive final round, with Mark up against fellow Paul Conlan in the Sumo Power Nissan Silvia S15. His opponent pushed hard but overcooked it slightly, enough to give Buff the advantage. In the second run, Mark just had to put in a run that would not see him in the gravel.

At Silverstone, the top 8 saw Buff up against old rival Phil Morrison in his Silvia S15. It was so close, the judges couldn't call it and made them drive another two runs. Buff literally had no rubber left on his tyres and Morrison won the run 6-4.

But Buff wasn't disheartened, as yet again out of 40 drivers he was in the top 8 and is sitting in 6th place overall.
