Is there an electronic air cleaner in your future?

Our recent report on professional cleaning of home heating and cooling systems to remove dust mites and other pollutants suggested the installation of a good air filter to top off the job. The medical journal Immunology and Allergy Practice has now reported the results of a survey that measured high-efficiency electronic air cleaner (EAC) use in the home. The survey examined the homes of persons allergic to pollen, mold spores, dust mites, pet dander, and other common indoor air pollutants.

More than 80 percent of the respondents reported either "some" or a "significant" degree of relief after they installed an EAC. They not only felt healthier and more comfortable, but most were also able to reduce or eliminate their allergy medications. Most also reported that the benefits were noticeable within a relatively short time of installing the device-"within days" for 40 percent, and "within weeks" for another 35 percent.

The 1,412 surveyed households included 1,309 allergic adults and 507 allergic children. Pollen was the most common agent (87 percent) that subjects were allergic to, with dust mites (68 percent), mold spores (63 percent), and pet dander (53 percent) following close behind. (Most were allergic to more than one agent.) The survey's authors concluded, "The Recently reported was the case of a 20-year-old woman who had been taking the pills for several weeks. Her complaints of fatigue, weight loss, headaches, and proneness to bruising led to the diagnosis of aplastic anemia. Refusing transfusions on religious grounds, the woman died.
