Is there a train driver on board who knows the way to Portsmouth.

RAIL passengers were left stunned when their guard admitted the crew were lost - and then appealed for DIRECTIONS.

Travellers had already been left irritated after the packed train had twice shuddered to a halt for no apparent reason.

But not even hardened commuters used to delays being blamed on the wrong kind of leaves on the line could believe their ears when the guard came over the Tannoy.

He asked: "If there is a train driver on board who knows the way to Portsmouth, please could he come to the cab."

The train was bound for the Hampshire coastal town from London's Waterloo when it got lost near Woking, Surrey.

John Trewby, who was travelling to his home at Sheet, Hants, said: "It was an announcement on a train that surely beats all others for destroying passenger confidence."
