Is the Richard and Judy Book Club the new Big Read?

M2 BEST BOOKS-(C)2000-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The Richard and Judy Book Club, which for the next ten weeks is focussing on the shortlist for the Best Read category at the British Book Awards, has turned into a major marketing success, with all major booksellers, libraries and independents in the UK promoting the featured books.

Waterstone's, Ottackar's, WH Smith and Borders, have all placed promotional material for the Richard and Judy-featured books at front of store, and have also reported a growth in interest in the first book featured, Nigel slater's 'Toast'.

The stores hope that the promotion of the books on the Richard and Judy Show, which is shown weekdays on Channel 4 in the UK, will have the same impact as the BBC Big Read poll in 2003, which boosted sales by as much as 200% for some titles.

Library suppliers are also keen to jump on the bandwagon, sending out point of sale displays to their customers, with libraries themselves placing special displays of the shortlisted titles, which the public will vote on in ten weeks' time, reports Publishing News.
