Is Disney Doing Direct Retail Apparel Licenses?

Disney Consumer Products is believed to be on the verge of signing direct licensing deals with at least one major retailer (perhaps more) that would give each chain apparel exclusivity for a specific property.

As we've reported, Disney executives acknowledge that changes are imminent in its licensing program. However, the company tells us it won't comment on those changes until deals have actually been inked, which it says hasn't happened as of our deadline. One major national retailer acknowledges high-level meetings with Disney

The plans are said to involve only apparel. Disney apparel licensees with whom we've spoken acknowledge hearing rumors of changes, but none will say they've been told by Disney of specific plans. One licensee concedes concern, but also expresses confidence that "if they cut a deal with a retailer, I believe our products are good enough" that the retailer will use him as a supplier.
