Is Council Tax rise a way to pay for the Games? Get in touch - tell us what you think Email: letters@birminghammail.co.uk Twitter: @birminghammail Facebook: facebook.com/birminghammail Post: Birmingham Mail, 60 Church Street, Birmingham, B3 2DJ.

WHERE is the thinking of Birmingham City Council? What a time to announce that Birmingham's Council Tax is to rocket almost five per cent next year - adding another PS70 a year to the bill for the average home ('Council Tax rises by five per cent', Birmingham Mail, December 13).

They put in a bid to hold the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, money which in my opinion we cannot afford, and then they have the audacity to increase the Council Tax. But the devil within me suggests that the five per cent increase contains an element of cash to put aside for the Games should we be successful in winning with our bid.

The question must be asked, why the five per cent increase in Council Tax is even necessary when the council's 2018/19 budget cuts 'will mainly fall on social care services', as well as the closure and sale of Newtown Community Centre will save PS120,000 and cut backs to other services, plus of course, the closure of day nurseries and children's centres.
