Irish Daily Mirror INVESTIGATION: HEALTH SERVICE CRISIS: COMMENT - System is a sick joke.

THE Irish health service used to be among the best in the world. Now it is a shambles - as our shock expose shows today.

There is deep anger at the long waiting lists, the shortage of beds, the scandalous use of hospital trolleys and the endless queues in our A&E wards.

People have died waiting for operations or because there was no local hospital for emergency surgery.

These are statistics you'd expect in a Third World country, not the roaring Celtic Tiger.

Our whole system is top heavy with bureaucracy and there simply aren't enough doctors, nurses or beds. At the last General Election, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern vowed to end waiting lists in two years. It was a disgraceful lie.

He should read our investigation and hold his head in shame.

Ireland is now officially the sick man of Europe.
