Iraqi merchant of U.S. nationality killed in Wassit.

WASSIT, July 6 (VOI) Co An Iraqi merchant of American nationality was gunned down inside his home in downtown Kut city, a police source said on Sunday.

"At the early hours of Sunday morning, unknown gunmen opened fire on Samir Muhammad Jaafar Khalati after breaking into his house in al-Houra area, central Kut, killing him on the spot," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq-Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

"The dead had a U.S. nationality and was a major importer of Chinese clothes in Iraq. He arrived in Iraq 10 days ago," the source noted.

The U.S. embassy urged the Iraqi police to investigate the incident, the source added.

Kut, the capital city of Wassit province, lies 180 km southeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
