Iranian VP Calls for Stronger Trade Ties with Iraq's Kurdistan Region.

Summary: TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi on Monday stressed the necessity for facilitated trade ties between Iran and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region in a move to boost the value of trade exchanges between the two sides.

"Authorities of Iran and the (Iraqi) Kurdistan region should boost economic exchanges to $15bln," Rahimi said in a meeting with the visiting prime minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Nechirvan Barzani, here in Tehran today.

Rahimi further reiterated that "the present barriers to border trade between Iran and the Kurdistan region should be removed, and traders and economic activists from both sides should be activated" to that end.

He also voiced Tehran's preparedness to share experience with the KRG to help the Iraqi region with progress and development, and added that abundant capacities exist on both sides for the further expansion of economic, political and cultural cooperation.

Also during the meeting, Barzani asked for the stronger role of private sector activities in Tehran-Kurdistan economic cooperation, and said upgrading the activities of the private sector would be an effective step in the advancement of Iran-KRG relations and attainment of their common goals and objectives.

Barzani arrived in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking trade delegation Saturday evening.

Iran and the Iraqi Kurdistan region have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion.

Both sides are working on a series of plans to take wide strides in expanding their ties.

Representative of the Iraqi Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Nazzem Dabbaq told FNA in July that the value of the trade ties between Iran and Iraqi Kurdistan region will exceed $4bln this year thanks to the two sides' growing cooperation.
