Iran Urges Abolition of UN Veto Power.
Iran's Prosecutor General Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei made the remarks in a meeting with Ukrainian deputy prosecutor general here in Tehran on Saturday, criticizing the "unfair law" based on which some countries have veto-wielding powers in international organizations.
Those countries use their veto right when they perceive their interests are in danger, he added.
"Western countries - specially the United States - have a completely dual approach toward the issue of human rights; and terrorism, which is a global issue, has turned into their pretext for invading other countries," he pointed out.
Mohseni Ejei also recommended the formation of a common judiciary system among "independent countries" in order to launch "a fair and international campaign against terrorism" in an organized manner.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China - have the power to veto.
If any of these Security Council members votes against a proposal, it is rejected, even if all others vote in favor of the measure.
In recent years, discussions have begun regarding the suitability of the veto power, bringing about arguments that the veto power slows down and even prevents important decisions on international peace and security.
Among the five veto-wielding powers, the US has frequently enjoyed the veto, blocking over 40 anti-Israeli resolutions sought by the Security Council since 1972.
