Mid-America Center dedicated. The Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs celebrated its official dedication recently. The multiuse facility includes a 30,000-square-foot arena that seats up to 9,200 people, a 24,500-square-foot exhibit hall, 42,300 square feet of meeting space, including two ballrooms and eight breakout rooms, and 13,000 square feet of pre-function space. The complex also includes 2,800 free parking spaces and a 133-room Country Inns & Suites, which opened last fall and is connected to the center.

DES MOINES

Iowa Events Center opens this year. The new Iowa Events Center will open in late 2004 in downtown Des Moines. The complex will be comprised of three separate but interconnected buildings, including two all-new facilities and the refurbished Veterans Memorial Auditorium, which offers 98,000 square feet of function space and seats up to 11,277 people. The new Wells Fargo Arena will offer seating for up to 17,000 people, while the Hy-Vee Hall will have 14,400 square feet of breakout meeting rooms and a 96,120-square-foot exhibit hall that can be separated. Hy-Vee Hall also will house the Iowa Hall of Pride.

Combined, the $217 million Iowa Events Center will provide more than 260,000 square feet of connected event space. All the facilities are connected by an enclosed skywalk system that also links major downtown hotels. More than 1,600 hotel rooms are within one mile of the convention facility, and there are 9,000 rooms citywide.

New hotel opens. The Hilton Garden Inn Des Moines/Urbandale opened this spring off Interstate 80/35 at 86th Street in Des Moines. The 148-room hotel features 11,000 square feet of meeting space, 24-hour business center, indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, and fitness center, and high-speed Internet access.

New science center opens in '05. The $60 million Science Center of Iowa opens in spring 2005 with a 220-seat IMAX theater and a 150-seat theater that will feature live performances. It will offer six learning areas plus a changing exhibits platform.
