Answers to the trivia questions on page 40: 1. On December 20, 1837 the Canadian militia seized the US vessel Caroline in the Niagara River (the vessel had been used to supply the William Lyon Mackenzie rebels). 2. The DCM in 1854. The VC (1856) and DSO (1886) were instituted later. 3. Private John Bernard Croak of 13 Quebec Regt, Royal Highlanders, was posthumously awarded the VC on September 27, 1918. He was born in Little Bay, Nfld. (Thomas Ricketts VC was gazetted on January 6, 1919). 4. They were exempt from militia service. (The Tunkers, incidentally also known as "Dunkers," were a religious group whose church building figured prominently in the Antietam battle). 5. (a) Lew Wallace, who wrote Ben Hur; (b) Abner Doubleday, who some claim was the inventor of baseball; (c) Rutherford B. Hayes (NOT Grant!). 6.
