Interplay Signs Tomb Raider Creators

(Associate Company to be Headed by Toby Gard/Paul Douglas)

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Interplay Productions today announced the establishment of a major new associated development company named Confounding Factor to be headed up by Toby Gard and Paul Douglas, the two most crucial members of the Tomb Raider development team.

The deal between Interplay and Confounding Factor is a multi-title world- wide exclusive publishing agreement. The firm is establishing offices in the west of England and their first game, under the working title of "Leviathan", is slated for release in 1999.

Toby Gard was not only responsible for the design and original concept of Tomb Raider, as lead graphic artist for the title, but he also created the character of Lara Croft. Lara has captured the imagination of gamers around the globe, and alongside Sonic and Mario, is possibly the most famous game character ever created. Paul Douglas was the lead programmer on Tomb Raider and as such is attributed with bringing Lara to life and making Tomb Raider a gaming classic.

Commenting on the deal, Gard said, "After the success of our first project we were courted relentlessly by a number of very high profile publishers, but in the end the decision to sign to Interplay was fairly straightforward. We wanted to work with a publisher who really appreciated games. Secondly, we needed a truly global publisher with distribution and marketing strength. Brian Fargo (Interplay CEO) and Interplay are recognized for putting game quality first, this aligned with Interplay's world wide presence meant that they therefore became the obvious choice."

Added Fargo, "I have said it before, and I'll say it again, you cannot go wrong by going with great talent and Toby and Paul are among the most talented developers that I have come across in recent years. We are very excited to be working with Toby and Paul and are sure that both Interplay and Confounding Factor have an excellent future together."

Founded in 1983, Interplay Productions is a leading developer and publisher of award-winning entertainment and educational software designed by gamers, for gamers.
