International Museum Day on May 18.

ISLAMABAD -- International Museum Day will be celebrated across the country on May 18 (Thursday) with an aim to acknowledge role of museums in the development of society and creating peaceful communities.

Different archaeological and cultural organizations will arrange activities to highlight importance of museums which are enriched with rare artifacts and models representing cultural identity of nations.

The theme of International Museum Day 2017 is 'Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums'.

This theme focuses on the role of museums that, by working to benefit society, become hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between people.

It also highlights how the acceptance of a contested history is the first step in envisioning a shared future under the banner of econciliation.

By choosing to say the unspeakable in museums, the theme of International Museum 2017 looks at how to understand the incomprehensible aspects of the contested histories inherent to the human race.

It also encourages museums to play an active role in peacefully addressing traumatic histories through mediation and multiple points of view.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society, and it has been steadily gaining momentum ever since.

In 2016, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 35,000 museums hosting events in some 145 countries.

Talking to reporter, Secretary National History and Literary Heritage (NHLH), Amir Hasan said museums play greater role in preserving the cultural identity of the nations.

Like every year, Pakistan will mark International Museum Day with a renewed pledge to enhance the role of museums to create a peaceful society. He said an exhibition of Pakistani antiquities will soon be arranged in China while China and Pakistan will also sign agreements for cooperation in museum sector in near future.

This was decided during a meeting with Chinese Cultural Counsellor You Yi held last week, he said.

Aamir Hasan said the division is also working on the project of establishing state-of- the-art museum in capital and redesigning work of the museum is in progress.
