International Conference on Aquaculture Kicks off.

Muscat, Dec 10 (ONA)--- The proceedings of the international conference on the development of aquaculture sector, organized by the Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry, at Al Bustan Palace Hotel under the theme ' Investment Opportunities ' kicked off today under the auspices of Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, Heritage and Culture Minister and lasts for two days. The Conference discusses a number of themes related to the development of aquaculture in the Sultanate, studying the investment opportunities, training human resources working in this field, besides reviewing some of the experiences of advanced countries in the field of aquaculture. Dr. Fouad bin Jaafar al-Sajwani, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister delivered a speech where he pointed out that the conference aims at modernizing the fisheries sector in Sultanate which stems from His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said's wise vision about diversifying sources of national economy, modernizing the production sector and building a sound national economy. He pointed out that the fisheries sector, which was accorded withspecial interest by the government, is the source of living for more than 36,000 fishermen, in addition to availing many job opportunities at the allied sectors. He added that the Sultanate has been very keen on utilizing modern technologies to improve the standard of living of fishermen and those working in its associated activities. It also strived to enhance the fish production in terms of size and quality through the use of modern methods that ensure the optimum use of this diversified wealth in the Omani waters. He added that the Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry has prepared an investment manual for the development of aquaculture in the Sultanate. It also forms a ministerial committee for this purpose and establish a governmental company for aquaculturewith the aim of establishing fish farms, fish fodder factories and providing the vet services and technical support. The company will operate some model farms without entering into competition with the private sector companies. He described the aquaculture investment in the Sultanate asgreatly promising ' and said that when all the requirements for having a sustainable aquaculture sector that can attract local and foreign capitals, the Sultanate will be qualified to be the regional centre for this industry; thanks to its strategic location. Professor Sena S. De Silva, School of Life and EnvironmentalSciences, Deakin University, Australia gave a presentation on the current global aquaculture picture followed by a film on aquaculture. The first day included two sessions. The first session on GlobalTrends in Aquaculture and Oman Resources included a number of working papers on the global status of aquaculture sector and therecent developments in the Arabian Peninsula, global supply and demand for aquaculture products, environmental biodiversity and fisheries resources in the Sultanate of Oman, suitable sites for aquaculture in the Sultanate of Oman, food processing, safety and logistics. The second session on Aquaculture Opportunities in Oman included a number of working papers on the development of aquaculture in Chile and its overall impact, farming technology based on business and market structures, shrimps farming opportunities in the Sultanate of Oman, recirculation of aquaculture systems, shellfish and abalone farming. A number of international organizations, such as the FAO, theAsian Aquaculture Network (AAN), international experts, World Aquaculture Society (WAS), Arab Agriculture Organization and a number of local and international companies with experience in thefield of aquaculture are taking part in the conference. ----Ends/ MS/FS
