MUSIC and films may be must-haves, but those tottering piles of plastic boxes look plain ugly.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to store those CDs and DVDs that are compact and smart.

If you love showing off your dazzling entertainment collection, house it beautifully in capacious wooden cabinets, wall-mounted display units or on sleek shelves.

Contemporary settings and short-of-space student rooms call for minimalist steel racks, floor standing towers, or just simple but decorative boxes.

Alternatively, the seriously stylish may prefer storage that's so well designed or innovative that it impresses on its own.

Whatever you choose, remember that listening to music and watching films should be a relaxing occupation - but being surrounded by clutter will ruin your karma.

So if you're tired of trying to tame that avalanche of plastic, tune in to these entertaining storage solutions.

STATEMENT STORAGE Some storage is so good it should be a focal point and Singways Echo CD rack, pounds 274, falls into this category. This wall-mounted oak veneer square has at its centre a slotted circle for CDs.

A matching shelf unit but with glass shelves is available at pounds 212.

If the above is beyond your budget Ocean has its own version of the design, with a white-painted steel square wall rack with a circular slotted centre piece for CDs, pounds 59.

Or take a look at citrus coloured CD cupboards by Probell. The Cedeus wall mounted storage in steel comes in zingy pink, red, yellow or orange. A cupboard with sliding front costs pounds 59. 50 and is available from Aram.

FUNKY STORAGE Why hide your CDs when you can pop them into a striking Spiral wall-mounted shelf in beech and steel, pounds 59, from Dwell, who cunningly incorporates a cube light in its acrylic rectangular CD rack, also pounds 59.

Attract admiring glances with a Grid CD rack, in silver satin finish steel, which has 112 CD slots. It costs pounds 29. 95 from The Cotswold Company. Handsome brown leather CD towers would be ideal for a masculine pad, and cost pounds 75 each from Marks and Spencer.

GRAND STORAGE Music addicts can store an impressive 760 CDs, or a combination of discs, DVDs and videos, in a Baltimore Media Library, pounds 149. It comes in a beech finish from The CotswoldCompany. Light, sleek, steel racks hold a generous amount of music but don't dominate a room. Ocean's CD/DVD rack holds 74 CDs and 52 DVDs, and costs pounds 49.

Go retro with brown and blue boxes designed by Barbara Brown for Heals. A mini disc box with brass label holder is pounds 2. 45.

HIDEAWAY STORAGE Conceal those CDs in a rotating wall-mounted holder, pounds 125 from Ocean, which looks like a slim steel solid column when not in use.

Eastern influences are ultra fashionable, and the Pier's Tibetan CD cabinet, pounds 199, is rather special. It's an intricately hand-painted piece, featuring authentic designs and symbolic colours. It's made of pine and holds 340 CDs.
