InterHealth Nutraceuticals: committed to research & education. (Supply Scource).

InterHealth Nutraceuticals, Benecia, CA, is a privately held company, which was founded in 1987 by William "Skip" Seroy following the sale of his family's vitamin company, Seroyal Brands, Inc., to ICN Pharmaceutical. Mr. Seroy, who is also president of the company, is a third generation dietary supplement manufacturer whose family has been part of the nutritional products industry since 1940.

Mr. Seroy discussed the advantages of his solid foundation in dietary supplements. "Given my family's long history in this industry, I have always been aware of the great potential that nutraceuticals have for enhancing the quality of life. In addition, as our society has become more focused on health-related issues, it has been InterHealth's goal to help educate consumers, so they can make knowledge-based decisions about the products that are right for them," he said. "InterHealth's mission is to provide unique, value-added nutritional ingredients based on solid scientific research and backed by a comprehensive marketing communications and education programs in support of its customers in the marketplace."

InterHealth researches, develops, manufactures, markets and distributes proprietary nutritional ingredients, which are sold worldwide to manufacturers of dietary supplements and nutraceutical food, beverage and cosmetic products. InterHealth's product range includes CitriMax[R], Super CitriMax[R] and Super CitriMax[R] Full Strength, formulated from the South Asian fruit Garcinia cambogia, which is meant to help reduce appetite and inhibit fat production. ChromeMate[R] is a patented niacin-bound chromium complex that plays a role in energy production and promotes healthy blood sugar and blood lipid (cholesterol and triglyceride) metabolism. L-OptiZinc[R] is a patented 1-methionine-bound zinc ingredient, which plays a role in cell growth and immune function. Protykin[R] is a phytoestrogen, cardioprotectant and antioxidant for women, which is derived from the root of Polygonum cuspidatum. It is meant to help reduce hot flashes, balance mood swings and promote healthy bone density. It also possesses antimutagenic , antibacterial and gastroprotectant properties. Lastly, ZMA[TM] is, according to the company, the only non-steroidal, all natural dietary supplement on the market today that is clinically proven to increase testosterone levels and strength in training athletes.

Over the course of the last two years there have been some significant developments at InterHealth. In the latter part of 2001, InterHealth introduced UC-II[TM] undenatured type II collagen complex that works with the immune system to promote healthy joints, while improving joint mobility and flexibility. "Hailed as an arthritis breakthrough, UC-II has been scientifically proven to substantially improve immune-related arthritis symptoms, including morning stiffness, joint tenderness and joint swelling," commented Mr. Seroy. It is also supported by six human clinical studies, including four conducted at Harvard Medical School, and is protected by four U.S. patents (world wide patents are pending)."

Early in 2002, InterHealth announced the results of a human clinical study conducted on the diet ingredient (-)hydroxycitric acid (HCA). Mr. Seroy discussed the details and significance of the study. "Using InterHealth's HCA product, Super CitriMax[R] Full Strength, the study broke new ground in demonstrating the product's efficacy in the battle against obesity. Participants in the study experienced not only significant weight loss, but increased fat burning lowered cholesterol, increased beneficial high densigy lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and a decreased body mass index (BMI)--an indicator of obesity health risk," explained Mr. Seroy. He said the study also revealed that Super CitriMax[R] Full Strength significantly increased serum serotonin levels (a mechanism of appetite control and eating behavior) and lowered serum leptin levels (a biomarker of the gene that regulates body weight).

For the future Mr. Seroy feels that the nutraceuticals market hinges upon research and education. "As consumers gain knowledge about the benefits of nutraceuticals, they will also become much more savvy and discerning," he said. "Given InterHealth Nutraceuticals' commitment to setting the standard for ongoing scientific research and its initiatives to reach consumers with education through the media, we strongly believe the company is poised to assume a leadership role with scientifically supported products that consumers will demand."
