Inter-University Women Cricket Championship commences.

ISLAMABAD -- The 14th All Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) Inter-University Women Cricket Championship began here at Shalimar Cricket Ground on Friday.

Teams of 16 universities from across the country are featuring in the Championship. Kinnaird College for Women is the defending champion.

Besides others, former Test cricketer and incumbent Senior General Manager Pakistan Women Cricket Shahid Aslam, renowned cricketers Sana Mir and Mohammad Waseem attended the opening ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahid Aslam hailed HEC for organising the Championship.

He said that Pakistan Cricket Board was trying to improve facilities for female players.

He credited Kinnaird University, Lahore and Lahore College for Women University in building Pakistan women cricket team.

He also lauded all the participating universities for their professionalism and inclusion of experienced coaches.

He expressed the hope that with HEC's collaboration, PCB would be able to use potential of female cricketers in the right direction.

Mohammad Waseem said that it was heartening to see women coming forward in sports like other fields of life. He said that number of women cricketers was increasing in Pakistan and they had started to produce better results at the international level.

He asked female players to consider professions like coaching and umpiring while finalising their career paths.

The final match of the Championship will be played on March 26.

Alongside various other initiatives for development of higher education sector in the country, HEC is also focusing to create opportunities for mental and physical development of university students. Every year, HEC organizes 35 men and 25 women sports championships in HEC recognized universities across Pakistan.
