TELECOMWORLDWIRE-9 July 2003-Intel acquires West Bay semiconductor(C)1994-2003 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Chip maker Intel Corp has completed the acquisition of West Bay Semiconductor Inc, a designer of high-speed, high-density networking chips.

The chips that West Bay Semiconductor designs are intended for voice and data transport over Synchronous Optical Networking/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy based optical networks. Intel will now combine West Bay Semiconductor's technology with its own 90 nanometer silicon manufacturing process. This combination is expected to reduce the cost, power consumption and complexity of optical networking equipment that use the chips, according to Intel.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not announced.
