Institute awards first scholarship

The Institute for Brewing Studies recently awarded the first scholarship grant from its Small Brewers' Scholarship Fund. The grant, in the amount of $3,650, will enable Peter Leavitt, formerly of Berkeley, CA's Triple Rock Brewing Co. and Twenty Tank Brewery in San Francisco, to attend the Brewing Technology Course at the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago. The course runs from September 3 through November 8.

A special selection committee of three members of the Institute for Brewing Studies' Board of Advisers, David Geary, D.L. Geary Brewing Co.; David Heidrich, Oldenberg Brewery; and Bert Grant, Yakima Brewing and Malting Co., evaluated and the applications of nine individuals seeking to further their brewing education and enhance their capabilities for brewing at a small brewery.

Leavitt was selected on the basis of his prior experience in the industry, coursework related to his work in brewing, brewing industry affiliations and future goals in the industry.
