MAGICAL KENYA SAMBURU MARALAL CAMEL DERBY August 24-26, 2012 The annual Magical Kenya Maralal Camel Derby takes place in the month of August in Maralal, a remote desert outpost in Samburu county. The quiet town of Maralal, about 348 kms north of Nairobi, is considered the gateway to KenyaOs wild and arid North, and is a mecca for adventurers, nomads, and camels. The camel derby has gained international recognition over years and has registered participants from 16 different countries including US, UK, Germany, Netherlands, India, and Ghana, as well as Kenya. The 2012 three-day derby will include expert and amateur camel ride competitions, the Tricamalon, a 10 km fun run, a 5 km fun run for the physically challenged, and bike races. CYCLE WITH THE RHINO September 15, 2012 Located in Lake Nakuru National Park, Nakuru, Cycle with the Rhino is an annual fund-raising initiative by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The main aim is to restore the 74 km electric fence, which is key in providing a successful rhino breeding sanctuary, while protecting the internationally-renowned birdwatcherOs paradise, famous for its 1.5 million flamingos. The funds are also used to carry out CSR (corporate social responsible) projects for various communities around the park, promoting community conservation education around Lake Nakuru National Park. Activities include a cycling race, game veiwings, and childrenOs activities. Each participant will receive a certificate and additional cash prizes for winners and runners-up. THE WILDEBEEST MIGRATION July-October 2012 The thrilling wildebeest migration takes place from July to October each year. With over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra on the run for the green pastures of the Maasai Mara, it is one of KenyaOs most dramatic and memorable safari experiences. Wildebeest can be heard for miles away as they thunder over the Kenyan border towards freshly-grown and nutritious lands. Zebra are swept up in the flow, peppering the herds with color as they head towards the mighty Mara River.
