Innovative techniques crucial for oil testing.

Byline: Arthur Macdonald

MANAMA: With signs of recovery from the recession, there will be an ever-escalation demand for oil and gas.

And that will mean the need for new and innovative techniques in non-destructive testing in the industry, Oil and Gas Affairs Minister and National Oil and Gas Authority chairman Dr Abdulhussain Mizra told delegates at the opening of the fifth Middle East Non-Destructive Testing Conference and Exhibition.

"Due to these multitude of challenges in this field, it also requires that professionals be updated on the new techniques to meet these challenges, and be on par with global market requirements," he said.

"The ability of Non Destructive Testing to detect defects before failure is of paramount importance in the oil and gas industry and is therefore critical to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of process facilities.

"The accumulation of knowledge gained over the previous four events has, no doubt, contributed not only to economic and technology developments, but also to safety and integrity at all levels," he said.

"Of course, the recent economic downturn re-emphasised the need for optimum utilisation of limited resources through the application of state-of-the-art technology and innovation," he added.

"In the non-destructive testing field, inventions, products and services that were perceived as a requirement a few decades earlier, now become a necessity for industries' existence and sustainability.

"Innovative technologies and enhanced human resources skills and capabilities have become mandatory for the success of any establishment.

"The theme of this conference, 'Leading towards innovative Solutions', is clearly very precise and timely and therefore should meet this very crucial requirement in the oil and gas industry," Dr Mirza added.
