Innovative new products proliferate at food and drink exhibition in London.

In spite of difficult trading conditions in recession-racked Great Britain, IFE shapes up as the UK's largest industry event until 1995. Frozen food assets are well represented.

Frozen foods and ice cream products are being featured as "shows within a show" at the Eighth International Food & Drink Exhibition in London April 25-28. The two segments' stands will occupy more than half of the Earls Court gallery level space. Some 40,000 trade visitors -- many of whom are high volume buyers from retail, wholesale, distribution and catering companies -- are expected to pass through the halls. No less than 1,300 exhibitors will be there to greet them.

Quick Frozen Foods International invited a number of exhibitors of frozen foods to preview their new products in this edition of the magazine, which will have bonus distribution at IFE. A review of selected innovative offerings follows.

In the Bag

Diced Roast Marinated Chicken, packed in resealable one-kilo ziptite bags for the foodservice sector, is new from Padley's. The Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK-based poultry specialist offers the product in a number of international flavors, including: Tikka, a blend of yogurt, ginger and spices; Chinese, which features sweet and sour spices and seasonings; Mexican, with a spicy taste fired up with chili, peppers, tomatoes and other ingredients; Louisiana Smoke, which imparts the hickory-smoke flavor of the American South.

Other items under the Padley's brand on hand at stand 5035, aisle K, are: Breaded Chicken Escalope, Chicken Kiev, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Butterfly Chicken Breasts, Tandoori Style Roast Chicken Breast, and a full range of fast food items such as nuggets.

Top Hat

Salmon and Prawn Tagliatelle, hand-made Fudge Brownies, and Scottish Raspberries are among the products being promoted by Dundee-based Top Hat Holdings at IFE. The company, which claims to currently be Scotland's leading producer of frozen ready meals, hand-made cakes, and Scottish soft fruit, will display its fare in the Scottish pavilion.

The frozen ready meals range is manufactured in an EC-approved factory for both retail and catering sectors. The products are supplied under private label arrangements to leading UK retail multiples as well as under the company's own Freezer Chef brand.

The range of hand-made cakes is produced by the Cake and Co. business recently acquired by Top Hat. Individually portioned products include carrot cake, chocolate fudge brownies, caramel shortcake, gingerbread, walnut cake and seasonal specialties.

And from the group's Scotfruit fresh and frozen soft fruit marketing division come raspberries, strawberries and blackcurrants. Frozen berries and purees are offered to manufacturers and processors.

At stand 5270 will be gourmet soya ices (80% organic and kosher) and vegetarian frozen ready meals from London-based Berrydales. Six dishes now available in 340g retail and 340g and 1.3kg catering packs are: Pasta Primavera, Mediterranean Bean Ratatouille, Vegetable Couscous, Leek and Mushrooms in a whole grain mustard sauce, Basmati and Wild Rice Pilaff and Parsnips and Spinach in a ginger apple sauce. All are low in calories and fat, while most are free of dairy, egg and gluten ingredients.

Berrydale's ices come in retail (100ml and 500ml) and catering (two-liter) (two-liter) packs. Honey Vanilla, Maple & Walnut, Chocolate, Berry and Ginger & Honey are the flavors. All are preservative- and dairy-free, as well as being low in fat, calories and cholesterol.

Delicious Donut Co.

Nine new Bakehouse Cakes will be on display at stand 4429. Produced by Witney, Oxon-based Delicious Donut Co., the individually wrapped products feature the following flavors: Banana, Carrot, Bramley, Apple, St. Clements, Coffee and Walnut, along with what is described as "moist and gooey" Chocolate Fudge Brownies, Devil's Food Cake, Chocolate Truffles and Paradise Slice.

The pre-cut cakes, which sell for 43p per slice, come in units of 20. Also being introduced by the company are nine new flavors of Bakehouse Flapjacks. Other established products offered include American Muffins, Crunchy Cakes, Donut Rings and Soft and Chewy Cookies.

Galleon Seafoods

Sharing a stand with Kershaws Frozen Food Ltd. (#5660) is Galleon Seafoods Limited. The Frome, Somerset-based company will use IFE to launch a new retail brand of king and queen scallops. It will also promote scallops on the half-shell and a catering pack of scallop shells suitable for microwave and baking applications.

Galleon has been more active in international markets beyond Europe lately. Welks, for example, are being shipped to Japan for use by the sashimi industry. Primary markets remain on the European continent, however, where it sells fairly large volumes of cockles, crab and various fish items in addition to scallops and whelks.

Product lines being produced at Dawnfresh Seafoods' recently-opened |pounds~8.6 million factory in Bothwell Park, Lanarkshire, will be displayed at IFE. Among items packed under Starfish, Mull of Kintyre and King's Choice labels are coldwater prawns, scampi, scallops, queenies, and fish goujons.
