Injury not so Fab for Eagles.
BEFORE a hoop was shot Fab Flournoy told me without a trace of false modesty that his Newcastle Eagles were chock full of enough talent and mental strength to make a clean sweep of all four British basketball trophies this season.
They then went out and lost their opening fixture at home!
However, the Fab prediction has proved to be very probably correct - his impeccable Eagles have swooped to claim both knockout trophies available so far and are currently top of the pecking order when it comes to the championship.
Unfortunately, in their latest moment of glory, the winning of the BBL Trophy, Flournoy crashed to the floor clutching his leg in agony.
He was in a bad way and had to be helped off injured.
Even when he received the glass trophy and forced a flashing smile he was limping and in obvious pain.
It turned out that Fab had torn his Achilles tendon and he's undergone an operation that will keep him out for the rest of the campaign.
A dreadful blow to both team and coach, far and away the most successful sportsman in our city.
Let us hope the Eagles and the inspirational Charles Smith, in whom Fab has always professed great faith, can finish the job as deserved by all.
