Initio takes licence to embed Arc 600 processors in USB and SSD controllers.

TELECOMWORLDWIRE-3 July 2009-Initio takes licence to embed Arc 600 processors in USB and SSD controllers(C)1994-2009 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

Arc International, an intellectual property holder, announced Thursday that Initio, a manufacturer of ASICs for storage applications, has taken a licence for the Arc 600 core for use in USB 3.0 controllers and controllers for solid state disks (SSDs).

The company said that the Arc 600 will replace the 8051 cores previously used for these applications. Recent developments in USB and data transfer speeds have stretched the limits of performance for the 8051 requiring additional capabilities, according to Arc. The Arc 600 has sufficient processing power to handle the 5.0Gb/s data rate of USB 3.0 as well as the more complex USB 3.0 control logic.

The Arc 600 occupies the same silicon area and operates at the same level of power as the 8051.

No details of the licence payments were disclosed.
