Information Today acquires "Online" Magazine & Bowker Assets.
Information Today, Inc. (ITI; Medford, NJ) has acquired Online magazine from Online, Inc. (Wilton, CT). No terms of the deal were given. Although the change is effective immediately, Online's January/February issue will be first published by ITI.Described as the "flagship of Online's fleet of periodicals and conferences," Online was launched in 1977 and is published six times a year. It has a controlled circulation of 7000. The title publishes articles, reviews, news and commentary for information professionals, librarians, and related executives who gather, manage and use electronic information in corporate, academic and government settings.
ITI president Tom Hogan, Sr. said the acquired title "has been our worthy competitor for over two decades, and we have a profound respect for its quality and comprehensiveness. It truly is he journal of record for our field." ITI produces magazines and conferences for the library and information industry. Its magazine titles include flagship Information Today, a monthly launched in 1984, Computers in Libraries, Searcher, Multimedia Schools, a magazine launched by Online, Inc. in 1994, Link-Up and Intranet Professional.
Online, Inc. said the sale is part of its ongoing strategy to reach beyond its original audience to a broader b2b market. In the recent past, the company has launched a number of seminars and workshops covering such topics as DVD technology and applications, intra-nets, Web-based virtual communities and buying and selling e-content. Online, Inc. will continue to publish EMedia and EContent magazines.
Also, as part of a cooperative effort with Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Bethesda, MD) to purchase the R.R. Bowker assets from Reed Elsevier (London) last month (see related story), ITI acquired the publishing rights to a line of Bowker reference products serving the library, publishing, book- selling and AV markets. The acquired references include Literary Market Place and its international edition, American Book Trade Directory, American Library Directory, AV Marketplace, American Men & Women of Science, Library Resource Guide and The Bowker Annual Library & Book Trade Almanac.
