Information Minister Discloses MIBF Details.
He said that MIBF has been ranked among the top three fairs at the GCC level, and ranked second at the Arab level in terms of purchasing power and public demand, and occupied a distinguished position at the world level in terms of quality of activities and events directed to the segments of society, specifically programs of the family and children.
He added that 882 publishers will participate in MIBF this year, from 30 countries, pointing out that there are countries that will participate for the first time in this exhibition, namely China, Bulgaria, Canada and Sri Lanka. He added that 523000 titles will be displayed and posted on the website, of which 35% are new releases.
He pointed out that OIBF management decided to host governorates as guest of honour instead of cities. He added that the Governorate of Al Buraimi will be the guest of honor this year, adding that a rich program has been prepared about this governorate that will cover all days of the fair. He also said that more than 25 media institutions will participate in covering the events of MIBF.
On the level of community initiatives, the Minister of Information said," MIBF annually celebrates community initiatives and there is a team headed by Vice- Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) for this purpose. There will be more than 20 community initiatives, and the best community initiative will be honored at the end of the fair, based on that the winning initiative will be sponsored for one full year.
"We have started to promote the principle of volunteering and it will be present at the Muscat International Book Fair in its 24th edition. The will be 24 volunteers whose mission is to provide guidance and assistance to visitors to the exhibition," said the Minister of Information.
Sheikh Hamad bin Hilal al- Ma'amari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture for Cultural Affairs, also spoke about the cultural events that will accompany the 24th MIBF. He said that the will be 106 cultural events this year compared to 64 events held last year, 22 of which will be on the Governorate of Al Buraimi.
American writer and journalist Thomas Friedman will also attend the exhibition, where he will present a lecture on his latest release. He will sign the book on February 22nd. Prominent names at local and Arab level will also attend the fair.
Yousef bin Ibrahim al- Balushi, MIBF Director spoke about the participating publishing houses and the organizational aspects of the exhibition, which include the basic standards and controls on intellectual property.
Al-Balushi pointed to the seminars that will be held on the sidelines of the exhibition. He said that there will be 3 specialized seminars dealing with three historical figures that contributed to human civilization, adding that there will be specialized seminar entitled "Oman in the Arab and Foreign Writings". He said there is a team to spot all the books about Oman in the Arabic and foreign publications. He also said that there will be a seminar on children, the media and the future. The seminar will be co-sponsored by three parties, namely the MIBF, the Public Children's Library and the UNICEF.
The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 20th, 2019 at 7 pm at Oman International Exhibition Centre under the patronage of Ahmed bin Nasser al- Mahrzi, Minister of Tourism.
