Inforite Offers ASIST

ASIST, a clipboard-like Applications Specific Integrated Systems Terminal for data entry with the portability and ruggedness of handheld terminals and the full power and flexibilities of a desktop/laptop microcomputer is now available from Inforite Corporation. ASIST is suitable for applications unfeasible before now because portability and ruggedness could not be found with such power and flexibility on presently available data collection terminals.

The portability and ruggedness of ASIST is enabled by its light weight, compactness, battery operation of 16 hours without recharging, high shock resistance and operation in high humidity.

ASIST is an integrated system controlled by two microprocessors; one is a 16-bit, 8-mhz, Intel 8086-compatible processor and the other, a processor to monitor all I/O devices in the system. It has memory of 256K bytes each for masked ROM and RAM. Storage RAM is 256K bytes, expandable to 1M bytes. EPROM can be 128K or 256K of read only memory.

The I/O devices which come standard on the ASIST are: an alphanumeric keyboard and 43 programmable function keys, all with click action; a pressure sensitive area for graphics input with approximately 100 dots/inch resolution; a liquid crystal display of 256 x 64 dots or 8 lines of 40 characters per line; a calendar clock readable in year, month, day, hour, minute and seconds; an acoustically coupled modem and a transmitter/receiver for optical connection to a stand with an RS232 interface.

The normal mode of operation of ASIST is to receive data and instructions from a host computer for a period of operation and then transmit accumulated data at the end of that period back to the host. This two-way communication with the host computer is through an optical interface to a stand which has an RS232 interface connection to the host computer. An acoustic coupler is also built into the ASIST for data output. The optical interface transmits at a rate of up to 19,200 baud and the acoustic coupler at a rate of 1,200 baud.

ASIST is controlled by a multi-tasking, multiprocessing operating system which enables any function to be activated at any time. Any of the 43 function keys can be depressed, a signature may be entered, a bar code scanned, time recorded or variable data entered and the operation will be accepted.
