Industry needs better balance.
IT was good to hear the Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, expressing on television recently his desire to nurture a more equal society in which commerce can thrive.
Unfortunately, the Conservatives, in their cloud-free, blue towers of the deep south, are proving to be very good at looking from the top down, but inept at building from the bottom up.
I hope the Labour Party returns to its roots, and enables UK manufacturing (and especially heavy industry) to complete on a level playing field with its European competitors. How many blue collar jobs have been lost to Europe during the last 30 years? Do the Conservatives really believe that blue collar jobs are for "yesterday's industry"? Do the Conservatives really believe that spending tens of billions on HS2 and a further PS15bn on Cross Link 2 is a better option than empowering UK manufacturing industry? Do the Conservatives really believe that it is sensible to spend PS50bn on a further runway at Heathrow? Landing slots at Heathrow are reportedly currently trading at over PS20m a piece.
How can UK regional airports and their customers afford fees of that magnitude? J L BOWES, Middlesbrough
