Industrial triad to promote foamed PET bottles.

PET preform and bottle design specialist Plastic Technologies Inc. (PTI), Holland, Ohio, has enlisted two partners to help in commercializing its oPTI foam-overmolded lightweight PET bottles. German moldmaker Foboha GmbH (U.S. office in Beverly, Mass.; advaltech.com) and machine builder Ferromatik Milacron, a German unit of Milacron LLC, Batavia, Ohio (:milacron.com), will collaborate with PTI to improve speed to market and commercial viability for overmolded oPTI bottles. Introduced at NPE 2009, these bottles consist of a pearlescent foamed PET inner layer and clear PET outer skin produced by overmolding a second layer onto the preform. They can provide unusual visual and tactile appeal while reducing colorant usage to a single layer. The dual-layer structure can be used to optimize barrier properties--for example, with an oxygen barrier in one layer and a CO2 barrier in the other. Foboha builds rotary cube-type stack molds for multi-material molding. The three companies jointly aim to improve cost-efficiency of the oPTI bottle process, which has been the main hurdle so far.
