The smart antenna system was developed at the Fraunhofer IIS in order to realize a robust and low cost indoor localization system for multi-purpose industrial and urban use. The system consists of at least two direction of arrival (DoA) estimators. Each of these systems consists of a four element patch antenna array, connected to a four-channel RF receiver and a FPGA. Working in the 2.45 GHz or 868 MHz ISM band, the localization is done by triangulation of each system's angles of arrival for the signal from several arbitrarily mobile transmitters.
