New Delhi/Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Mar 30 (ANI): Earth Hour 2019 was observed on Saturday across different parts of the country and various important government buildings and historical monuments switched off their lights for an hour as part the global initiative.
In the national capital, the lights were dimmed at the Rashtrapati Bhawan and the India Gate for an entire hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
Mumbai also contributed towards saving the electricity as the lights at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus were dimmed too.
A resident of Delhi, Mohit said, "Light has been switched off at the India Gate and at the President's house as well. People coming here would get to know why lights are being switched off. This event is being observed across the world. The earth's temperature is increasing and we can not survive in the future."
"We come here every weekend and lights are generally on. Earth Day is a good initiative and we can resolve the problem of climate change. We should switch off lights and other electronic appliances when we are not using them," Manish Jha told ANI at the India Gate
A resident of Mumbai, Moin told ANI, "Everyone should do it. It is a big step for our community. People do not know about this. I hope everyone aware of this."
Another Mumbai-resident Praveen Shah said, "It is a good thing to happen. I also do this and I have kept the lights of my shop switched off for three hours."
The movement of the Earth Hour began in 2007 in Australia, and it has now become a global campaign wherein non-essential lights are turned off at 8:30 pm on a specific day towards the end of March.
Globally various other countries, including Australia, United States of America, Egypt and France, also observed the hour by dimming the lights of famous historical monuments including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, New York's Empire State Building, Pyramids of Egypt and, the Eiffel Tower. (ANI)
