India : SC to CENTRE - Make stand clear on EC's plan to introduce new TOTALISER machine.
The Supreme Court has ordered the Centre to file an affidavit on whether they endorse the Election Commission (EC)'s plan of using a new machine to mix votes recorded on EVMs to boost secrecy of votes during counting which helps to prevent voting pattern's disclosure.
The election body in August had filed a plan with the government to introduce 'Totaliser' machine to count votes.
According to the court, politicians tend to use voting patterns to create policies for various wards and constituencies based on support.
Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told the Rajya Sabha last month : "The Election Commission is of the view that by use of 'Totaliser', a further level of secrecy in voting and the mixing of votes at the time of counting will be achieved, which will prevent the disclosure of pattern of voting at a particular polling station."
