Patna: The ruling Janata Dal United (JD-U) in Bihar headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar has come under fire following its party vice-president Prashant Kishor's reported move to work for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. Very strangely, the JD-U is a key ally of the BJP which is now at war with Mamata's TMC in West Bengal.
Kishor is a leading poll strategist who has worked for various political parties in the past and ensured victory for them.
On Thursday, Kishor met West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata and reportedly agreed to work for her TMC to help it win the next state polls due in 2021. As such, Banerjee faces very strong challenge from a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is fast making inroads into her bastion despite her all bids to stop its rolling juggernaut.
In the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, the BJP managed to win 18 seats -- an increase of 16 seats, against TMC's 22 in West Bengal with a total 42 seats. It's this increasing strength of the BJP which has kept Banerjee unnerved and has forced her to enter into a deal with the poll strategist to help her party win the next state elections.
However, the BJP is not amused over the activities of Kishor and has hit out at the JD-U for failing to keep him under command. "It is for the JD-U to understand as to how many political parties he (Kishor) will work for. We feel he doesn't have any understanding of the basic politics," a BJP spokesperson Rakesh Sinha told the media on Friday.
The JD-U came out in defence of its leader. "Kishor holds a company whose services any party can get just like people across political parties use the phone services of government-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)," JD-U principal general secretary KC Tyagi explained on Friday.
Kishor who was appointed JD-U vice-president last year is credited with scripting victory of many parties in the past and has worked with many parties, such as the BJP, JD-U and the Congress. He is again in the news for scripting the spectacular victories of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh where his party, YSR Congress Party, won 151 of state's total 175 assembly seats. The YSR Congress Party was also able to win 22 out of total 25 LS seats in the state.
