India's T- 90 tanks roll out.

THE FIRST batch of indigenously built state- of- the- art T- 90 main battle tanks were handed over to the army's armoured division on Monday at a function in Avadi near Chennai.

The batch of 10 tanks, each costing around Rs 14- 15 crore, rolled out of the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi and were inducted into the army by minister of state for defence M. M. Pallam Raju.

The Avadi factory plans to produce 100 such main battle tanks per year with Russian technological assistance. These tanks are built to withstand nuclear, biological and chemical attacks.

The Indian Army has around 700 of these frontline tanks in service at the moment. The contract with the the Heavy Vehicles Factory includes purchase of another 400 tanks.
