Independent living.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a new rule to allow people with disabilities and older adults access to community living.

Part of the Affordable Care Act, the rule supports the Department of Health and Human Services' Community Living Initiative by making an effort to increase individuals' quality of life.

The new rule gives participants of Medicaid's home- and community-based services programs access to community living over institutional care. This community living provides participants with more independence by allowing them to be with people they care about, choose their own home, have a job and join in community activities.
