In-House Counsel: Thomas Ting.

Byline: Todd Nelson

Thomas Ting has seized the opportunity to serve as lead counsel to companies hit with two of Minnesota's biggest fraud cases.

Ting was senior counsel at Petters Group Worldwide when Tom Petters' $3.65-billion Ponzi scheme collapsed.

Asked by the government to head the legal department of Polaroid Corp., one of Petters' legitimate businesses, Ting managed through criminal proceedings and bankruptcy and receivership litigation.

"A lot of people questioned my decision" to stay on, said Ting, who didn't want to leave the work unfinished.

Ting began his current role as executive vice president and general counsel at Starkey Hearing Technologies amid a federal investigation into a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scheme. Several former executives and associates were convicted or entered plea agreements.

In each instance, Ting embraced working with legal and executive teams to bring stability. Starkey, he noted, has since launched a new hearing aid incorporating sensors and artificial intelligence and featuring language translation and fall detection.

"It's making the most of an opportunity," Ting said. "You seize it and you make that positive impact."

Ting's schoolteacher parents sacrificed comfortable futures to move from Taiwan when Ting was 5 so he and his sister could pursue broader individual development opportunities in this country.

Ting began honing his teamwork and leadership skills at Davidson College, where he majored in medical ethics and was a football team captain and fraternity president.

Ting, who earned his law degree at the University of North Carolina School of Law, previously was general counsel at Sun Country Airlines and legal counsel at MoneyGram International.
