IN PRACTICE On the feast of All Saints' Day, we remember the holy men and women who have gone before us. St. Philip Neri said, "The best preparation for prayer is to read the lives of the saints, not from mere curiosity, but quietly and with recollection a little at a time."

To foster reflection on the saint of the day, there's always Butler's Lives of the Saints (Harper-SanFrancisco), which has been updated for modern audiences by Michael Walsh.

Other helpful books are Lives of the Saints by Richard P. McBrien (HarperSanFrancisco), Voices of the Saints by Bert Ghezzi (Doubleday), and All Saints by Robert Ellsberg (Crossroad).
