We honor the memory of and acknowledge the work of these recently deceased nurses in our state. Sharing the names and other information about our nursing colleagues is one way we honor their memory.
Christie, Katherine, RN, BA, (86) passed away January 2, 2017. A long time employee at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, CO. She was a Nurse Manager in Women's Health/ Gynecology. She completed a BA from the College of St. Francis a number years after becoming a Registered Nurse. She was a mentor to many new graduate nurses. Christie was active in NAACOG/AWHONN for many years. Following her retirement, she was a volunteer at Swedish.
Hayden, Mary Louise "Mary Lou" Thrash, RN, a former Colorado resident and Pediatric Nurse, died December 11, 2016 in Paradise Valley, Arizona.
Hosterman, Mary P. O'Brien, RN (66) passed away December 7, 2016. A graduate from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1972, Mary served our country for 22 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. She was stationed at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver.
Lopez, Victoria (Vicki), LPN (96) was born in Akron, Colorado and passed away on December 21, 2016. She lived in Colorado her entire life.
Mummey, Margaret "Peggy" Worth Fairchild, RN (91) passed away in Taos, NM on December 11, 2016. She graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Denver, in 1949. In addition to working at St. Lukes Hospital, she was employed at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Denver, Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Fitzsimons Hospital. Her long career also included working in hospitals in Connecticut and Farmington, ME and numerous other positions prior to retiring in 1992. She moved to Taos, NM in 2014.
Park, Betty Louise, RN (86) passed away in Lakewood, CO on December 4, 2016. She received her nursing degree in Albuquerque, NM in 1974 and was employed at Lovelace Hospital.
Scholten, Barbara Jean, RN, graduated from nursing school at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, SD in 1954.
Toomey, Shelia J. (84) of Ft. Collins, CO, passed away December 31, 2016. Her career included working in Massachusetts, Minnesota and Colorado.
Whitmore, Betty R., RN, passed away in November, 2016. She was a graduate of St. Luke's Hospital, Denver.
We received information about the death of those nurses honored above. All of them lived in, worked in and/or were educated in Colorado. Membership in the Colorado Nurses Association is not required for inclusion.
