In memoriam: notable passings of 2007.


Bob Hattoy, 52, prominent AIDS activist, was felled by cardiac arrest March 4 in Sacramento.

Anthony Castro, 19, Gay Games gold medalist who came out while on his high school football team, died in a Southern California car accident January 21.

Barbara Gittings, 75, gay rights pioneer who pushed the American Psychiatric Association to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness and formed the influential lesbian group Daughters of Bilitis, died February 18 in Kennett Square, Pa., after a long battle with breast cancer.

Andrew Anthos, 72, died February 23 in Detroit of injuries from what he said was a homophobic attack, a claim disputed by the local police and coroner.


Jerry Falwell, 73, fundamentalist Christian leader, died at 73 of heart failure May 15 in Lynchburg, Va.

Yolanda King, 51, civil rights advocate--and daughter of Martin Luther King--passed away May 15 in Santa Monica, Calif., of an unknown ailment.

Merv Griffin, 82, entertainment mogul, died of prostate cancer August 12 in Los Angeles.

Yolanda Retter, 59, lesbian separatist and influential "herstorian" who helped organize lesbian history archives at USC and UCLA, died August 18 in L.A.


Tammy Faye Messner, 65, gay icon and subject of the cult documentary The Eyes of Tammy Faye, succumbed to cancer July 20 at her home near Kansas City, Mo.

Jane Rule, 76, author of Desert of the Heart, the hot lesbian novel that was turned into the film Desert Hearts, died of complications from liver cancer November 27 on Canada's Galiano Island in British Columbia.
