In memoriam: William K. Frankena.

At age eighty-six William K. Frankena died on October 22, 1994 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was born on June21, 1908.

Frankena pursued his college education at Calvin college and graduate education at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. He taught at the University of Michigan for over forty years until his retirement in 1978 as the Roy Wood Sellars Professor of Philosophy. He was known to his students and younger contemporaries, not only as an insightful ethical thinker, but also as an erudite historian of ethics. For many teachers of philosophical ethics, his Ethics (1963) has been an excellent teaching guide, along with his influential papers. Many of these papers were published in a collection entitled Perspectives on Morality (1976). His Carus Lectures, Three Questions About Morality (1980), is an invaluable resource for scholars of metaethics. Frankena's writing on philosophy of education also deserve attention from scholars interested in the topic.

Active in the profession, Frankena was a past president of the American Philosophical Association, the Chair of the Council of Philosophical Studies from 1965-72, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and other professional organizations. If I may enter a personal note, for me and for many of the fifty participants of the Institute of Ethics and Philosophy lecture was an experience of a lifetime. His analytical and historical knowledge was an inspiring guide to thinking and teaching about ethical problems. His death is a loss, not only to those who remember him as a teacher and friend, but also to students and scholars of moral philosophy throughout the English-speaking world. -- Antonio S.
