In line for final.

THE Lake of Menteith produced yet another bumper haul for anglers fishing in the second semi-final of the Scottish Club Championships.

The 21 three-man teams landed a total of 399 fish, of which 277 were returned.

In the bag were 11 trout over 4lbs, plus one at 6lb 9oz and another at 7lb 1oz.

Many similar sized fish were returned, as each angler may only retain his first two fish for the weigh in.

The club at the top was the Rainbow Warriors team with 31 rainbows. Club captain Laurie Taylor had 12 fish to his own rod, as did teammate John Cree. The third member, Alex McEwan, had seven. Laurie took his at Nairns Bay and the Malling Shore where he was fishing a candy booby and hoppers on a slow glass line. John was fishing a candy booby and diawl bachs on a ghost-tip line at Lochend, while Alex took his fish at the Malling Shore and the Heronry on diawl bachs and fabs on a floating line.

The rod with the best catch of the night was David Bonnington, captain of the Alba Orvis "B", the second top team, who were just three behind the Warriors.

David had 13 to his own rod, fishing nymphs and drys. Team mate Paul Garner took eight at the Henronry and Malling Shore with boobies on a midge tip, and Gregor Fleming had seven from the Rookery with a fab and diawl bachs on a midge tip. David started off fishing nymphs high in the water, the best killing fly being an Alba nymph - a tweaked-up diawl bach in black with sunburst cheeks, which showed well in the slightly coloured water.

David then changed to a floating line and started catching on a yellow owl dry.

David said: "I got a fish on my first drift and steadily took more after that.

"The quality of the Lake's rainbows is terrific.

"The biggest of my first two was 3lb 15oz but I got more in the 4-5lb class."

The qualifying teams were: 1) Rainbow Warriors 31 trout for 67lb 4oz; 2) Alba Orvis B 28 trout for 61lb 12oz; 3) Ferry Fly Fishers, 23 trout for 50lb 10oz; 4) Rothes Oak 23 trout for 50lb 3oz; 5) Saltire FF, 24 trout for 49lb 2oz; 6) Change FF B 21 trout for 47lb 12oz; 7) ABC&D A 20 trout for 47lb 110z; 8) Newton Mearns B, 21 trout for 47lb 3oz; 9) Alba Orvic A, 21 trout for 43lb 3oz; 10) Monifieth Trout AC, 18 trout for 43lb 3oz; 11) Leslie and Glenrothes, 19 trout for 42lb 13oz.

They will be joined by Menteith Ospreys, Change A, North Berwick, Crown FF, Stirling Castle AC, Ayr Travellers FF B, Dunfermline Railway, Lochgelly SRC AS B and Grizzle Cats "A" for the final on September 19.

IT'S not often you break your personal best three times during a holiday fishing trip, but it happened for Hamilton teenager Jamie McWilliam.

The venue was one of Gran Canaria's fishing lakes where Jamie landed his biggest ever, a cracking 28lb mirror carp.

Congratulations Jamie, you will shortly be receiving details of your fantastic rod and reel prize courtesy of top tackle makers, Daiwa, our Fish of the Week sponsors.
