In The Dock: Night in custody.

A JOBLESS teenager spent a night in custody after he failed to appear in court.

David Nicholas Walters, 18, of Spinney Close, Ely, had admitted stealing a pushchair, valued at pounds 209, from a Mothercare store on January 6 and had been ordered to appear at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on January 24.

When he failed to comply with the bail conditions he was arrested and remanded in custody. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and fined pounds 40 although magistrates accepted the time spent in custody as an alternative to payment of the fine. He was also ordered to pay pounds 45 costs.
