In La Jolla, it's bring-your-own-barbecue for buffet on the beach.

Their holiday tradition is a family-friend outing

Always ready to take advantage of glorious weather and an uncrowded winter beach, the families who gather for this holiday get-together in La Jolla, California, redefine the term "buffet."

It's a b.y.o.b. affair: bring your own barbecue. Lined up, the barbecues easily handle a cook-and-serve buffet.

Nice day, but no beach? Try a local park with picnic tables and barbecues.

Mixed Skewered Vegetables

Christmas Cookies Tangerines

Mulled Cider Sparkling Water

In this festive menu, turkey and all the extras are transportable, and most of the foods are cooked at the site. It's a meal to satisfy 16 adults (with enough extra for about 6 small children). For recipes and packing directions, turn to "Oysters, turkey, sausage, vegetables" (see index).

A special feature of this meal is the cooky exchange. Each family brings a generous supply of one or more favorite kinds of cookies. Everyone eats some for dessert, then people swap extras to take home.

It's easy to divide duties, provisions, and supplies for this event. Some families can provide the barbecues; noncooks can bring raw foods to be cooked on the barbecues, and people who like to cook can bring finished dishes. A team of 2 or 3 chefs can easily oversee the grilling.

How many barbecues?

In order to cook everything at once, you need several barbecues to provide enough grilling space. The equipment used here was 2 barbecues with 12-inch-diameter grills, I with an 18-inch grill, and I with a 23-inch grill. Any combination you can assemble is fine. Everything cooks over medium coals, so grill space can be shared.
